At 9:48 a.m., the day’s only express bus leaves the Central Terminal in the heart of Nozawa Onsen village. It heads to Snow Monkey Park, the bus stop below Jigokudani Yaen-Koen, where monkeys soak in hot springs in winter.
One place to stay. You carry your luggage only on arrival and departure days. Days on the snow, evenings at the village’s sotoyu (public baths). And one day, this bus takes you to the monkeys. That is this five-day, four-night trip.
This article draws on official information from the bus company, ski resort, village, temple and prefecture available on November 1, 2026, and prices checked through a route search that day. Where winter 2026–27 details had not yet been announced, we say so. We will update this page when they are announced.
The answer first — five days and three decisions
- Day 1: Shinkansen from Tokyo to Iiyama, then a bus to Nozawa Onsen. A sotoyu bath in the evening
- Day 2: A ski or snowboard lesson. If you do not ski or snowboard, ride the gondola up the mountain
- Day 3: Another day on the snow. If you do not ski or snowboard, spend the day in the village with baths and hot spring eggs
- Day 4: Take the direct express bus to the snow monkeys at Jigokudani Yaen-Koen
- Day 5: Return from Nozawa Onsen to Tokyo (or stop at Zenkoji by getting off at Nagano Station)
There are three decisions to make.
- Which Nozawa Onsen accommodation to stay in for four nights. Staying in one place saves you from moving luggage. Choose based on the Day 4 bus stop and whether you can walk to the slopes.
- Booking a lesson. Group lessons for visitors from overseas at Nozawa Onsen Ski School run only from December 21 to March 21. The school advises booking ahead for December through February.
- Which day to visit the monkeys. There is only one bus a day. Watch the weather and the monkeys’ “attendance forecast” so you can swap this day with another.
Before you go — January and February 2027
January and February are when everything this trip needs comes together.
- Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort: November 28, 2026–May 5, 2027
- Group lessons for visitors from overseas: December 21–March 21
- Nozawa Onsen → Snow Monkey Park express bus: December 5, 2026–April 5, 2027
- Monkeys soak in the hot spring around December–March
Check the dates likely to be busy, too.
- Japanese holidays: January 9 (Sat)–11 (Mon, Coming of Age Day). February 11 (Thu, National Foundation Day) and February 23 (Tue, Emperor’s Birthday) are also holidays
- Taiwan’s Lunar New Year holiday: February 4–10. February 27–March 1 has also been reported as a holiday period
- Nozawa Onsen Dosojin Festival: In 2026 it ran January 13–15. The 2027 dates have not been announced. See “Tips” below for whether you can attend
Day 1 — Tokyo to Iiyama, then by bus to Nozawa Onsen
For Nozawa Onsen, get off at Iiyama Station, beyond Nagano Station.
- Tokyo → Iiyama: About 1 hour 45 minutes to 1 hour 51 minutes on the Hokuriku Shinkansen. Example: depart Tokyo at 7:52 a.m. → arrive Iiyama at 9:43 a.m. (Hakutaka)
- Iiyama → Nozawa Onsen: About 25 minutes on the Nozawa Onsen Liner from bus stop 4 at Iiyama Station. Buy a ticket from the machine beside the stop
Only Hakutaka trains stop at Iiyama Station. Kagayaki and Asama trains do not. Check the train name when booking.
The Liner’s winter timetable has not been released yet (as of November 1). The Nozawa Onsen Tourism Association says there are periods when the Shinkansen and bus do not connect. Once the winter timetable is out, choose your Shinkansen and bus together.
The Liner arrives at the village’s Central Terminal (in the operator’s timetable the stop is “野沢温泉(中央ターミナル)”, shown in English as “Nozawa onsen”). This is where the Day 4 monkey bus leaves, so find its departure point when you arrive.
After leaving your luggage at your accommodation, head to a sotoyu. The village’s walkable public baths cost nothing to enter (donations to maintain the baths are welcome, and there is a donation box at the entrance). In winter (December–March), they open at 6 a.m. and close between 9 and 11 p.m., depending on the bath.
You only need to remember a few things about bathing.
- Sit down and wash your body before entering the bath
- Do not wear a swimsuit or put your towel in the bathwater
- Bring your own towel and soap
- If the water is too hot and you want to add cold water, ask others first
The water can be very hot. For a first bath, a place such as Kumanote-arai (熊の手洗湯), which has both hot and cooler baths, may be easier.
Transport cost today: Tokyo to Iiyama ¥8,690 (reserved seat, example) + Liner ¥600 (winter fare yet to be announced)
The Shinkansen price is an example from a route search for a reserved seat on Tuesday, January 19, 2027. It varies a little by day.
If you have not reached Tokyo yet, start here → Airport to City by Train in Japan
Day 2 — your first day on the snow
If you ski or snowboard — a morning lesson
If it is your first time, start with a lesson. Nozawa Onsen Ski School has a division for visitors from overseas run by a company called Canyons.
- Group lessons run December 21–March 21. At other times, only private lessons are available
- Adult group lessons cost ¥16,500 for a full day (4.5 hours) or ¥13,000 for a half day (2.5 hours)
- Check the meeting place and time in your booking details beforehand
The ski school’s slope is Hikage, higher up the mountain. From the hot spring village, take the free covered moving walkway, Yu Road. Hikage also has a ticket center, toilets, childcare, places to eat and rental shops.
A one-day lift pass costs ¥7,800 for adults and ¥4,700 for children under 15 (the regular pass for December 19–March 28). Online booking is available only on a Japanese-language screen. If you cannot read it, buying at the ticket center counter on the day is enough (cash and cards accepted).
Cost today (if you ski or snowboard): Full-day group lesson ¥16,500 + one-day lift pass ¥7,800 + rentals (check with the shop)
Check the booking page to see whether the lesson price includes a lift pass or rentals.
For the order of rentals, lift passes and lessons, and what to do from arrival until you start skiing → Lift Passes, Rentals and Ski School in Nagano: What to Book First
If you do not ski or snowboard — ride the gondola up the mountain
You can go up the mountain even if you do not ski or snowboard.
The Nagasaka Gondola has all-glass walls and seats ten. It climbs 789 m in about eight minutes from Nagasaka at the base to Yamabiko Station. A ride-only ticket costs ¥3,750 for adults and ¥2,750 for children. The ride down is free, so you pay only to go up (a separate ¥500 IC card deposit may apply; it is refunded when you return the card).
In winter, the Nagasaka Gondola operates from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (weather may change this). After your time up the mountain, leave enough time to ride down before 3:30 p.m.
Just below Yamabiko Station are Kitchen Seabos, which serves oven-baked pizza, and Rest House Yamabiko on its second floor. Beside them is a slope where children can sled; plastic sleds can be borrowed free of charge. If your companions who ski or snowboard have no lesson, you can meet here for lunch. If you want lunch together on a lesson day, first check the school’s lunch break time and meeting point. It is colder up here than at the base.
You can also go up on the Hikage Gondola (¥2,250 for adults, ¥1,650 for children; the ride down is free here too).
At the base, try Hikage Kids Park. It has a sled run and inflatable play equipment, and entry is free (December 19–March 28, 9 a.m.–4 p.m., subject to snow conditions). Only its moving walkway, Naskey Way, costs extra. There is also a free rest room for nursing and diaper changes. Around 1:30 p.m. on weekends from December 19 to March 28, the mascot Naskey visits the park.
For children aged one to six, Hikage has a childcare center (¥7,000 a day, capacity around 20). Bookings open at 9 a.m. on November 16, and weekends are busy.
Cost today (if you do not ski or snowboard): Nagasaka Gondola ¥3,750 (ride down free)
Day 3 — another day on the snow
If you ski or snowboard — another day at Uenotaira
Spend another day practicing what you learned on Day 2. Uenotaira and Paradise have wide, gentle slopes. They are colder than the base.
If you are tired, finish at lunchtime and go to a sotoyu. You can also ski for just one day and keep this day free. Staying in the same place makes it easy to lighten the schedule.
Cost today (if you ski or snowboard): One-day lift pass ¥7,800 + rentals
If you do not ski or snowboard — baths, hot spring eggs and a village walk
In the morning, head uphill to Ogama. With water near 90°C, it is the “village kitchen” where residents boil vegetables and eggs. Only villagers can go inside, but you can watch the steam from nearby. Morning is the loveliest time.
You can make your own hot spring eggs. Buy eggs and a net at a nearby souvenir shop, put them in the cooking basins beside Matsuba-no-yu, Juodo-no-yu, Kamitera-yu or Kumanote-arai, and wait about 20 minutes.
While you wait, have an onsen manju steaming outside a shop (from ¥70 each). Eat as you walk past the sotoyu buildings. Oyu, the village symbol, retains the form of an Edo-period bathhouse. Nakao-no-yu is the largest wooden bathhouse. They are enjoyable even from outside.
There are 27 stamp stations around the village. Collect ten stamps for a towel (get a stamp book at the tourist information office or a souvenir shop).
When you get cold, go to Sparena, a large open-air bath where swimsuits are worn (¥900 for adults; swimsuits can be rented). Sources differ on opening hours and closing days, so check before going.
The village has many slopes, including on the sotoyu circuit. With an older companion, two or three places a day are enough. Yu Road to Hikage and the village shuttle to Nagasaka (December 12–March 28) can save a lot of uphill walking.
Cost today (if you do not ski or snowboard): About the cost of an onsen manju and eggs + Sparena ¥900
Day 4 — direct express bus to the snow monkeys
This is the highlight of the trip.
A Nagaden Bus express runs from Nozawa Onsen to Snow Monkey Park without a transfer. This route ran at the same times last winter. On this winter’s timetable, the outbound bus runs daily.
| Nozawa Onsen (Central Terminal) | Iiyama Station (stop 2) | Snow Monkey Park | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Outbound | Departs 9:48 a.m. | 10:15 a.m. | Arrives 10:50 a.m. |
| Return | Arrives 3:15 p.m. | 2:50 p.m. | Departs 2:15 p.m. |
- Fare: ¥2,000 one way
- Boarding point: “Ex88” at Nozawa Onsen Central Terminal (for Snow Monkey Park, winter only)
- Payment: The timetable says credit cards, contactless payment, PayPay and Alipay can be used on board
Some details for this winter are still unknown: which days the return bus runs (it ran daily last winter, but the field is blank on this winter’s timetable), its fare (¥2,000 is last winter’s fare), whether cash is accepted, and whether reservations or a capacity limit apply.
Check with Nagaden Bus before choosing your accommodation and buying a park ticket. Ask three things: ① which days the return bus runs ② whether a reservation is required and, if so, how to make one ③ whether there is a capacity limit. If the return bus is confirmed to run daily, you can swap your monkey day with another day.
From the Snow Monkey Park bus stop, it is about a 35-minute walk on a snowy mountain path to the park. Arriving at 10:50 a.m. puts you at the park around 11:25 a.m. The day’s only return bus departs at 2:15 p.m. Since you cannot count on walking the path in exactly 35 minutes, leave the park around 1:10 p.m. (reach the stop around 1:45 p.m., leaving a 30-minute buffer). Leave even earlier in deep snow or on icy paths. You have about 1 hour 45 minutes at the park.
The mountain path is unpaved, with slopes and steps, and cannot be used by wheelchairs, carts or other wheeled items. Wear rubber boots or snow boots in winter. You do not need a suitcase. Leaving it at your accommodation is the biggest advantage of staying four nights in Nozawa Onsen.
From December 1, park admission for adults is ¥880 online or ¥1,000 at the counter. In winter (December–April), people with online tickets can enter first.
The monkeys are wild, with no cages or barriers. There are three rules to follow.
- Never feed the monkeys. Leave food in storage before entering. If monkeys learn to take food from people, they may crowd around your feet or grab your belongings
- Do not stare into their eyes up close. To a monkey, it looks like a challenge to fight
- Move away immediately if a baby monkey approaches
You may take photos and videos. But you cannot put a camera into the bath or use a drone or selfie stick.
Some days the monkeys do not come, and there is no refund if they do not. The park publishes a weekly “monkey attendance forecast” and posts on its official X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook whether monkeys are there that day. Check the evening before and choose a day when they seem likely to come.
Back in the village at 3:15 p.m., warm up at a sotoyu.
Cost today: Bus ¥4,000 (out and back) + park admission ¥880 (online)
If you miss the bus — go via Nagano Station
There is only one of these buses a day. If you miss it, you can go via Nagano Station: take the Liner from Nozawa Onsen to Iiyama, the Shinkansen (11 minutes) or Iiyama Line (about 50 minutes) to Nagano, then an express bus (about 50 minutes, ¥3,000) from stop 24 at Nagano Station’s east exit to Snow Monkey Park. Connections determine the total: using spring through autumn timetables, it takes about 2 hours 20 minutes to 2 hours 40 minutes one way and roughly ¥4,200–¥6,300. That is two to three times the direct route. Recheck the plan when the winter Liner timetable is released.
Nagano Station’s express bus boards in queue order; if it is full, take the next one. The park closes at 4 p.m. in winter, so a late arrival leaves less time there.
If you miss the 2:15 p.m. return bus, there are also express buses to Nagano Station (the last departs at 5 p.m.). But it is not yet known whether you can get back to Nozawa Onsen that same day. The winter last departure of the Liner from Iiyama to Nozawa Onsen has not been announced. Check the return connection once the winter timetable is out.
Day 5 — Nozawa Onsen to Tokyo
- Nozawa Onsen → Iiyama: About 25 minutes on the Liner
- Iiyama → Tokyo: About 1 hour 50 minutes on Hakutaka
If you stop at Zenkoji: Take the Shinkansen from Iiyama to Nagano (11 minutes). From stop 1 at Nagano Station’s Zenkoji exit, take a bus about 15 minutes to Zenkoji Daimon (¥190 according to Zenkoji’s guide), then walk about five minutes to the main hall.
To enter the Naijin area inside the main hall and take the Okaidan Meguri walk, you need a Naijin ticket (¥800; also covers the Zenkoji History Museum). It closes at 4 p.m. from December through February. Buy the ticket from the machine on the right after entering the main hall from the front. Leave large luggage in a coin locker at Nagano Station first.
Transport cost today: Liner ¥600 + Iiyama to Tokyo ¥8,690 (reserved seat, example)
Example with a Zenkoji stop: Liner ¥600 + Iiyama to Nagano ¥1,410 (unreserved seat) + bus ¥190 × 2 + Nagano to Tokyo ¥8,250 (reserved seat) = ¥10,640
Snow can delay trains. It is safer not to schedule your flight home for this day. Leave Japan the day after another night in Tokyo.
Choosing where to stay — which part of Nozawa Onsen?
Location — can you walk to the bus stop and slopes?
- Within walking distance of Central Terminal. Both the Liner from Iiyama and the Day 4 monkey bus use it (the stop name is “野沢温泉(中央ターミナル)”)
- Within walking distance of the slopes. Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort says the base slopes are “a short walk from almost anywhere in the village.” Distances vary by accommodation, though, and paths can be icy. Check the route to the nearest slope on a map
- Near Hikage or the entrance to Yu Road if you are taking lessons. The school is at Hikage, reached from the hot spring village via Yu Road
Ask the accommodation about winter shuttles before booking.
Price — enter your dates on a booking site
We could not find an official guide price for a winter night in Nozawa Onsen. Enter your travel dates on a booking site. Comparing holiday periods (such as January 9–11) and Taiwan’s Lunar New Year holiday (February 4–10) with other weekdays helps you choose dates.
Accommodation tax is charged separately from the room price. Nozawa Onsen village charges 3.5% of the room-only rate; it does not apply when that rate is under ¥6,000 per person per night. Nagano Prefecture also has a tax, so check the combined amount with your accommodation when booking.
Type — accommodation that suits this trip
- Ryokan: A way to stay that fits a hot spring village. For how a night works → Ryokan (旅館) Etiquette: A Night at a Ryokan, Step by Step
- Pensions and hotels: The village has these too. Compare the “Location” points above first

The budget — how much per person for five days and four nights?
Here is an example for a round trip from Tokyo and four nights in Nozawa Onsen. Accommodation and meals are excluded.
| Item | If you ski or snowboard | If you do not ski or snowboard | Figure used |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shinkansen Tokyo ⇔ Iiyama (round trip) | ¥17,380 | ¥17,380 | Reserved seat ¥8,690 × 2 (January 19, 2027 example; varies by a few hundred yen depending on the day and ticket type) |
| Liner Iiyama ⇔ Nozawa Onsen (round trip) | ¥1,200 | ¥1,200 | ¥600 × 2 (spring–autumn fare) |
| Express bus Nozawa Onsen ⇔ Snow Monkey Park | ¥4,000 | ¥4,000 | ¥2,000 × 2 |
| Jigokudani Yaen-Koen | ¥880 | ¥880 | Online admission (¥1,000 at counter) |
| Group lesson, one day | ¥16,500 | — | Adult full day (4.5 hours) |
| Lift pass, two days | ¥15,600 | — | One-day pass ¥7,800 × 2 |
| Nagasaka Gondola (up only) | — | ¥3,750 | Adult ride-only ticket; down is free |
| Sotoyu | ¥0 | ¥0 | Donations welcome |
| Total (accommodation, meals and rentals extra) | about ¥55,600 | about ¥27,200 | Prices checked November 1, 2026 |
Add four nights of accommodation (priced for your dates on a booking site), accommodation tax and meals. If you ski or snowboard, add rentals (check with the shop). If you do not ski or snowboard, add Sparena (¥900) if you visit.
- JR EAST PASS (five days, ¥35,000) will not pay for itself on this trip alone. The Shinkansen round trip is about ¥17,400. Buses beyond Nagano Station are not covered by the pass
- If you visit Zenkoji, add the ¥800 Naijin ticket and the difference in transport costs (see Day 5 above)
Can the itinerary work? — what to arrange first
- Book lessons first. Group lessons run only December 21–March 21. Advance booking is advised for December–February
- Choose Hakutaka and book a reserved Shinkansen seat early. Only Hakutaka stops at Iiyama
- Check the Liner’s winter timetable when released. Some services do not connect with the Shinkansen
- Check the monkey bus with Nagaden Bus before choosing your accommodation and park ticket. Ask which days it returns, whether and how to reserve, and whether there is a capacity limit. Know the alternative via Nagano Station too
- Buy the park ticket online. Online ticket holders enter first in winter, and it is ¥120 cheaper
- Keep the monkey day flexible. Use the attendance forecast and weather to swap it among Days 2–4
- Book childcare early if needed. Reservations open November 16, and weekends are busy
Shorten or extend the trip
Shorten to four days, three nights
Drop Day 3 (your second day on the slopes). If most of your group does not ski, you can drop Day 2 instead and make it a trip of sotoyu baths and monkeys.
Connect it with Tokyo’s New Year
If you are in Tokyo over New Year, you can follow Tokyo 5 Days 4 Nights: New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day with this trip. Nozawa Onsen’s group lessons start on December 21.
Extend to Hakuba (+2 nights)
For more variety in ski resorts, go on to Hakuba. The route from Nozawa Onsen to Hakuba goes back via Nagano Station (11 minutes on the Shinkansen from Iiyama to Nagano, then an express bus from Nagano Station’s east exit to Hakuba).
- The Nagano Station ⇔ Hakuba express bus takes 1 hour 10 minutes to 2 hours 5 minutes on the spring–autumn schedule (winter timetable yet to be announced)
- A Hakuba Valley area pass costs ¥11,100 for an adult day pass (currently on sale online). It cannot be canceled after purchase, but includes free rides on Hakuba Valley’s V-line shuttle on your ski day
- Hakuba Happo-one and Tsugaike Kogen are scheduled to open on December 1
- Hakuba village also charges an accommodation tax (from ¥200 per person per night)
We could not find a direct public bus from an overnight stay in Hakuba to the monkeys. That is why this itinerary visits them while based in Nozawa Onsen.
To compare Nozawa Onsen and Hakuba → Hakuba, Nozawa Onsen or Shiga Kogen? Choosing a Nagano Ski Resort
On blizzard or rainy days
Make a blizzard day a day without travel. Since you stay in one place, spending it at a sotoyu and your accommodation is simple.
- Do not make it monkey day. Jigokudani Yaen-Koen may close without notice due to weather or other conditions. Road conditions can delay buses too
- If staying in the village, try Sparena. It has an outdoor bath where swimsuits are worn, and a rest room
- If heading to Nagano, try Zenkoji. The main hall is indoors (closes at 4 p.m. December–February)
- Heavy snow is often forecast several days ahead. Make that a day without travel
Even in January and February, travelers report warm days when melting snow made paths muddy. On snowy paths, taking short steps and placing the whole sole on the ground makes falls less likely.
If you plan to drive on snow, first read → Driving in Japan in Winter, Hokkaido Included. If you have never driven on snow, it is safer to leave travel through snowy areas to trains, buses or tours. This itinerary is built that way.
Tips to make the trip easier
- The Dosojin Festival is a fire festival designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan. In 2026, only ticket holders could watch. Tickets were for village residents and people staying in the village to watch (ask your accommodation). Day visitors could not attend. The 2027 rules have not been announced.
- JR EAST PASS does not cover buses beyond Nagano Station. Pay separately for both the Nozawa Onsen express bus and the express bus from Nagano Station.
